Art Criticism from Hsiao

Recorded at the Taipei Fine Arts Forum, autumn 2025.

Hsiao reads the Inner Desolation series against a longer tradition of twentieth-century interior painting — Hopper, Hammershøi, Hsia Yang — arguing that Chan-Ao’s rooms are not portraits of absence but records of a particular kind of attention: the kind that arrives only after the figure has left.

“The interior here is not the subject. The interior is the instrument.”
